SCROLL DOWN FOR ALL THE LATEST NEWS of RECENT & FORTHCOMING EVENTS….

OUR NEW WING WITH 6 BEDS continues – SINCE JULY 07.

Now with well over a year’s successful operation, with the kind co-operation of The Evangelismos Hospital, our separate 6 bed HOSPICE FACILITY goes from strength to strength. These newly furnished, comfortable patient rooms, the quiet room for visitors and patients, together with the shaded roof garden, and nurse’s office and kitchen, makes the HOSPICE UNIT a complete and welcoming environment for patients and their families.

On duty : nurses check the equipment before a patient is admitted, and one of our volunteers decorates the Christmas tree

We are very grateful for furniture donated by The Orphean Singers in the patients rooms, Curtains in the Quiet Room by Tala Pine , and the green tilting patient's chair by Polis Charity Foundation
The Hospice Roof Garden at The Evangelismos; made possible by kind donations of pots & plants, and the keen work of our volunteer gardeners

We are pleased to be able to inform Members and all the friends of The Friends that our Hospice Unit continues to provide palliative care to those in need, and that we have, on occasions, had four patients in simultaneously. Over half of these were Greek Cypriot, the others were expatriates of British & other nationalities.

In the traditional Hospice manner this care has been at
no charge to the patients .

All costs of care, which is averaging around € 205 (CYP 120) per day, being met from our current collected funds, shop takings, fund raising events and contributions by generous donors.

THANKS TO YOU ALL.

ANGLICAN CHURCH HELPS HOSPICE

We are grateful for the generous donation of funds each month from their ‘Wedding Ministry’ per their notice:

2008 AGM

We held our AGM on 27 th March 2008, which was well attended by The Committee and 44 members, so 52 in all.

It was a useful meeting in a pleasant atmosphere, notably lacking in the dissent of earlier years, which is a reflection of the Friends’ success in getting our Hospice facility up and running.

There was unanimous approval for the way in which The Friends’ Hospice is being run. - Useful suggestions were received from the floor during a Q&A session after completion of the formal business.

SUBS/DONATIONS: please make sure that you have paid you sub for ’08, any amount > €2 gladly accepted. – How about the cost of 1 coffee or 1 beer per month? Say just € 20 a year in a very good cause? - Post a cheque to Angela, Membership Sec, PO Box 60163, Paphos 8101 ; or give cheque/cash to a Committee Member.

PLEASE REMEMBER:
(1) We have almost no admin’ overheads, the Volunteer Committee picks up most of the day-to-day admin’ costs (2007 costs were CYP 53), so:

     (2) all your donation goes directly to patient care.

(2) All donations are receipted, and our annual accounts audited.

(3)  WE RECEIVE NO GOV’T OR OFFICIAL FUNDING…though Mr Xenios Mamas on behalf of the Director, Labour Relations Dept. Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, did say in his letter of 5 July 2007:

“ Last but not least, our Ministry would like to congratulate The Friends’ of the Paphos Hospice’ for the charitable contribution to the people in pain and would like to assure that your request will be taken into consideration during our future decision- making process.”

We wait & hope for some financial support from The Ministry of Health, as do the Friends for Life Hospice’ at Limassol, which has been set up along the same lines as our own to serve the community.

Our 2 Hospice Shops Remain the main source of funds…

One at Chlorakas (above) and one at Pissouri (below) - Our grateful thanks go to the untiring effort of Sue Busfield & her dedicated Helpers, numbering over 40 hard working ladies whose fund raising continues to exceed all expectations, also at Pissouri where Pat Wilson & her group are showing that there is great support for our efforts in that locale.

The consequent high stock turnover means that donations of household articles, bric-a-brac & clothing in good condition and small pieces of furniture are always welcome for sale . Tel: Sue on 26 65 32 23

We also run two storage containers, enabling Sue and her crew to sort and distribute the incoming donated stock to best effect. – arising from all the running around with loads of ‘stuff’ that this entails:

An immediate task for the van was to move a spare orthopaedic bed from the Hospice to a patients home…

from this ......              to........

this…

now we have the van

Thanks to Shakespeare at the Curium who very kindly donated funds specifically to buy it, and Geo. Pavlides & Araouzos Ltd who gave a generous discount on the Opel van, so that €5000 also went into the Hospice fund.

Below: Our Hospice beds benefit from the donation of these colourful hand crafted quilts from Jill Dare’s talented Quilting Group - our warm thanks to these dedicated ladies.

We are actively pursuing a policy of co-operation &
co-ordination with all the interested organisations, and hope that 2008 will see benefits resulting for all concerned

Our Hospice facilities are open to all – no one will be turned away for lack of money – we hope, of course, as we are totally dependent on voluntary donations, that those who can afford to pay some, or all of the charges, will make appropriate donations to our fund.
This enables us to continue to support the needy.

COSTS - The total cost of maintaining the care regime for a Hospice patient is running at some € 205 ( CYP 120) per day . Comprising medical & pharmaceutical costs plus the standing charge per day that we pay for ‘hotel services’ at The Evangelismos. This can amount to over € 17,800
CYP 10,000) per month
if all 3 beds are occupied.

FUND RAISING NOTES

1) Maureen and Trevor Gage continually raise money on their organized walks for the Hospice, plus they give out our literature.   They strive to make enough each time to pay for a bed for a day.                 Check with them @ 26643079 for details of the next walk.

2) Perhaps have a coffee morning or dinner at home to raise €100?

AN APPRECIATION :

While the main satisfaction for The Friends comes from providing the Hospice Service to those in need, it is nevertheless good for all our volunteers to know how much their work is appreciated by others.

The following letter was received from a relative of one of our patients, and is reproduced with his permission in anonymous form:

The Friends of Paphos Hospice

P.O. Box 60163

Paphos 8101-   Cyprus

Dear .............

I write to thank you ...and all your remarkable colleagues ...for the generosity & loving care you gave my sister,..........., during her last days; it will ever be appreciated

Recompense is, of course, impossible but I hope you will accept the small cheque I enclose. It requires neither publicity nor acknowledgment

This letter is short, simply because there are no adequate words to express my thanks & admiration.

From the heart, sincerely;

Noel ...........”
